Ronald Carl Liikala

AHMEEK — Ronald Carl Liikala, 82, passed away with his family by his side February 9, 2018 of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ron was born September 11, 1935, in Ahmeek, Michigan, to Carl “Butch” and Aino (Jaaskelainen) Liikala.

Ron attended Calumet Schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1952.

After high school, he served in the Navy which was followed by college at Michigan Tech University where he graduated with degrees in Physics (BS) and Nuclear Engineering (MS).

He was also a member of the MTU hockey team. Ron spent many memorable years with his family members at their camp at Five Mile Point on Lake Superior, where he also worked the local lighthouse.

After graduation, Ron took his newly acquired degrees, young family and sense of adventure and moved across the country to Richland, Washington, to work for General Electric and later Battelle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Ron’s career after retiring from Battelle included teaching as an adjunct Professor at WSU Tri Cities and three years of consulting in Vienna, Austria for the International Atomic Energy Agency, where he and his wife, Dorri, were able to travel and explore several countries in Europe.
