Dorothy Mae (Jonas) Bays

LIVONIA — Dorothy Mae (Jonas) Bays, 88, born 1929, died April 17, 2018.

She was the daughter of Wilbert and Eva Jonas. Dorothy graduated from Calumet High School in 1947 and Highland Park General Hospital nursing school in 1950.

Her surgical nursing career included stops in St. Clair, the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain and St. Mary’s Mercy Hospital in Livonia, where she worked with the afternoon OR crew for 20 years.

After retiring as a registered nurse, she volunteered with VFW Auxiliary Post 4012 in Northville, The Finnish Cultural Association, the Livonia Library book sale, as a Livonia elections poll worker and a longtime editor to her husband’s editorials for the Michigan State Police Command Officers Association.

Her commitment to crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, knitting, cribbage, Scrabble, memorization and word play kept her vibrant until her recent hospitalization.

She married George Bays in 1954 and spent 49 years in love with him until his death.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Cliff) Anderson; son, Gary Bays; sister, Wende (Bill) Hill; granddaughters, Carly (Craig) Heinz and Heather (Nick) Hornstein; great- grandchildren, Hayden and Aubrey Heinz; and loving friends and relatives in the Detroit area, the Keweenaw peninsula and across the country.

Viewing will be held at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road in Livonia, on Friday, April 20, 2018, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a church service at Grace Lutheran Church, 25630 Grand River in Redford Twp., on Saturday, April 21, 2018, with viewing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with service to follow.
