Gretchen (Hugh) Boyer

HOUGHTON — Gretchen (Hugh) Boyer, 74, a resident of Houghton, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at the UP-Health Marquette Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born on October 7, 1943, in Indianapolis, Indiana, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Teresa (Ferster) Glazier.

Gretchen was raised in Toronto, Canada, and moved to California as a senior in high school. She then graduated from Stanford University.

Between 1964 and 1966, she worked as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Ethiopia. She also taught English in Santa Clara, California, before earning a Master’s Degree in English from the University of Michigan. She taught English at Michigan Technological University from 1968 to 1971.

On December 27, 1970, she was united in marriage to Hugh Boyer and the couple resided in Houghton, where they raised their family.

Mrs. Boyer was a member of Portage Lake United Church in Houghton and played the harp for the Keweenaw Symphony in her younger days.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her daughter, Allison.

Surviving her are her husband, Hugh Boyer of Houghton; her son, Daniel (Silvia) Boyer of New York, New York; her brothers, Christopher (Sheryl) Glazier of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Kenneth (Patricia) Glazier of Pasadena, California; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Gretchen will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock, with Rev. Peter Norlin to officiate.

Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery at another time.
