Beatrice Pauline Lahti
BRAINERD, Minn. — Beatrice Pauline Lahti, known as Pauline, 84, of Brainerd, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Diamond Willow, in Baxter.
Pauline was born in Calumet, on June 23, 1934, daughter of the late Richard and Hulda (Kiilunen) Kauppila.
She attended and graduated from Calumet High School in 1952, after which she moved to Detroit.
Her first employment was at an insurance company in downtown Detroit. Later, she was employed by Brent General Hospital, in Detroit, as an admitting clerk, switchboard operator, and finally as secretary for the Assistant Hospital Administrator.
She married Donald Lahti on May 28, 1955. They lived their working years in Detroit and Livonia.
After retirement in 1989, they spent one year in Finland, where Donald was a teacher at the Reisjarvi Christian School.
Upon returning to the States in August 1990, they spent the following winter in Lake Worth, Florida, where they continued to winter until 2013.
In the meantime, they sold their home in Livonia, and moved to Calumet and Laurium in 1992, where they spent the next five summers.
In October 1997, they moved to Brainerd, Minnesota, to live at the Senior Apartments owned by the Brainerd Laestadian Lutheran Church.
Pauline was a homemaker during the years their children were growing up. After the children had grown, she worked for a cleaning company until retirement in 1988.
She was a member of the Brainerd Laestadian Lutheran Church.
Pauline enjoyed handwork, sewing, knitting and crocheting, traits inherited from her mother. She loved to use her hands.
She also loved to cook and bake for the family as the children were growing up. She continued her handwork during retirement years, until her eyesight and memory began to fail her.
She enjoyed accompanying her husband on his mission trips, which included the Suviseurat (Summer Services) in Finland, and to London, England, shortly after 9/11 in New York.
Pauline is survived by her husband, Donald, of 63 years of marriage; children, Timothy (Jill Wuollet) Lahti of Plymouth, Minnesota, Peter (Becky Wuollet) Lahti of Loretto, Minnesota, Patricia Lahti (Brian) Hillstrom of Rockford, Minnesota, and Matt (Kirsten Hawk) Lahti of Waterford; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; her brother, Calvin Kauppila of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; her sisters, Florence Swenson of Chicago, Illinois, and Louise (Bill) Vanderford of Tucson, Arizona; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of believing friends.
