Brian Berghefer

CALUMET — Brian Berghefer, 60, a resident of Quincy Street in Calumet, passed away peacefully at his home, following a short battle with cancer, on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

He was born on April 12, 1958, in Germany, a son of the late Ray and Barbara (O’Brien) Berghefer.

He graduated from Calumet High School with the Cass of 1976. He then went on to attend Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City.

Brian sailed on the Great Lakes starting in 1976, with the Interlake Steam Ship Co., and retired in 1999, last sailing on the MV Paul R. Tergurtha. After his time on the Great Lakes he worked at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, as a Med Tech for seven years.

On August 1, 2003, he was married to Marianne Martinkus. Brian loved spending time relaxing at the camp in Conover/Mercer, Wisconsin area. His time at the camp was spent riding his side by side, visiting with his neighbors, and lots of fishing.

Preceding him in death, was his parents; sister Colleen Berghefer; uncle Paul O’Brien; and two close friends; Bruce Gerard and Michael Bausano.

Survivng him are the love of his life and soulmate, Marianne; his faithful companion & buddy, Henry B; sisters in law, Christine Karman of Phelps, Wisconsin, and Kathy (Daniel) Kapsa of LaGrange Park, Illinois; nephew, Peter (Lisa) Kapsa of LaGrange Park, Illinois; niece, Jenna (Brad) Buckholtz, of LaGrange Park, Illinois; great nephews, Aaron & Kyle Buckholtz; great nieces, Karmen and Sarah Kapsa; 3 special friends, Dan LaVergne, Chuck Ellenich, and Russ Pattyn.

Private family services will be held.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
