Rochelle M. Dana

QUINCY — Rochelle (Shelley) Marie (Little) Dana, 75, passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2019, in her home in Quincy.

Shelley was born on December 14, 1943, in Highland Park, the daughter of Eugene and Hazel (Brown) Little. She spent much of her childhood in Almont, before moving with her family to Williamston in 1958. In high school, she was on the cheerleading squad, and was crowned the Snowball Dance Queen as a senior. She graduated from Williamston High School in 1961.

After school, she worked in different capacities for the State of Michigan for over 35 years, most of that time with the Department of Social Services.

She married Richard Dana in 1963 and together they raised two sons, Bret and Brian. They lived in Williamston until 1971 when the family moved to Calumet.

Shelly was a charter member of the Keweenaw County Historical Society in 1981. She was awarded the prestigious Lauri Leskinen Memorial Award in 1994 for her many volunteer contributions to the society over the years.

In 1995, Shelley moved downstate to Quincy. Together with her partner, Joe Shiffer, they took up farming and raised beef cattle, a pursuit they followed for the past 24 years.

Shelley enjoyed a number of hobbies including quilting, gardening, wreath making from the flowers she grew, and walking with her dog friend, Annie.

Shelley enjoyed traveling with her sister and best friend, Birdie. They were avid sports fans following their Michigan State University Spartans closely, even going to the 100th Rose Bowl in 2014 to cheer on their Spartans.

Those who knew Shelley were privileged. Their lives were enriched by her friendship. She never had an unkind word, was honest, and always willing to help. She always had a smile and an infectious laugh. She was a friend to all creatures great and small, a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Hazel Little; and brothers, Roger, Ronnie, and Roy Little.

She is survived by her sons, Bret (Mary) Dana of Hancock, and Brian (Karen) Dana of Corunna; her sister, Roberta (Birdie) Cross of Lansing; brother, Rick of Okemos; her partner of many years, Joe Shiffer of Quincy; Joe’s son, Jeff (Ingrid) Shiffer; grandchildren, Nicholas (Erica) Dana, Alex Dana (Kayla Bedell), Zachery Dana, Rachel Dana, Kathleen Shiffer and Derik Shiffer; great grandchildren, Josiah, Hannah, Aria, and Myles; and numerous nieces and nephews

A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2019. An announcement will be forthcoming.
