Sarah Hamel Bignall
MANISTIQUE — Sarah Hamel Bignall, 86, of Manistique, passed away March 1, 2019, at Garden View Assisted Living in Calumet.
Sarah was born February 28, 1933, in Marquette County, to the late Rev. John and Roberta Hamel. She graduated from Graveraet High School in 1950, and attended Northern Michigan Normal School, now Northern Michigan University.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Glenn, in 2010; one sister, Helen; and four brothers, Cor, Pete, Bob and John.
Survivors include four daughters, Karyn (Barry) Fay of Hubbell, Lynne (John) Faith of Mercer Island, Washington, Kristen (Mike) Laton of Albemarle, North Carolina, and Susan (Ron) Owensby of Belmont, North Carolina; one son, Daniel (Wendy) of Midland, North Carolina; 13 grand-children; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hamel Wolff of Chesnee, South Carolina; and one brother-in-law, Rex Bignall of Desert Hot Springs, California.
Sarah was very active in her church, The Church of the Redeemer, and enjoyed her weekly visit to TOPS. She was also a member of the Amity Group, took part in senior writing classes, and enjoyed playing bridge in multiple clubs.
She had a positive effect on many young children in her years as the Manistique Co-operative preschool teacher, many of whom visited her through the years.
Sarah will also be remembered for her weekly cooking column in the Manistique Pioneer Tribune, which resulted in a cookbook “At Home with Sarah” that included many useful “helpful hints”. In 1985, she was named Schoolcraft County Homemaker of the year.
The funeral is scheduled for April 6, 2019, at the Church of the Redeemer, Presbyterian in Manistique.
