Governor’s awards recognize volunteer work

Know a volunteer effort that goes above and beyond? Michigan’s governor wants to hear from you.

The Michigan Community Service Commission will take nominations through 5 p.m. Jan. 31 for the 2018 Governor’s Service Awards, given annually to individuals, organizations and businesses that invest significant time in helping others.

“These awards serve as a unique opportunity to highlight Michiganders helping Michiganders,” Gov. Rick Snyder said. “We want to hold up Michigan’s best volunteers and show them off as role models for others. I hope you will help recognize the outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Michigan by nominating them for the Governor’s Service Awards.”

Awards will be presented in 10 categories in 2018 that reflect the diverse nature of volunteers throughout the state. The categories are:

•Governor George Romney Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteerism, to honor an individual who has shown a lifelong commitment to community involvement and volunteerism.

•Lifetime Humanitarian Award, for an individual or family that has demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding civic and charitable responsibility to a community or organization.

•Senior Volunteer of the Year, honor individuals who are 65 and older who have taken action through service to make their community a better place to live.

•Volunteer of the Year, to honor individuals who strives to improve the lives of neighbors, friends, community or congregation through volunteerism.

•Youth Volunteer of the Year, to honor individuals who are age 21 or younger who have already begun making a significant difference in their community through service.

•Mentor of the Year, honor individuals who have made a significant difference in a youth’s life through mentoring.

•Outstanding Volunteer Organization Award, to honor organizations or clubs that make a demonstrated difference in their community or the state by inspiring people to volunteer.

•Education Service Leader Award, for schools, colleges, universities or other organizations that support youth to engage in service and volunteerism.

•Outstanding National Service Program Award, to honor programs that affect communities and successfully s•Corporate and Small Business Community Leader Award, to honor corporations and businesses that excel in community involvement and demonstrate excellent corporate citizenship by giving back to their community in a variety of ways.
