Fundraiser donations paid off
To the editor:
We want to thank our community for supporting the Barkell Elementary 5th Grades Mackinac Island trip. We know it can be overwhelming with the amount of fundraising we need to do to make this possible, but it is well worth it. Our children earned this trip by keeping their grades up and by doing the fundraising and behaving well. It was a very educational and enjoyable trip.
We went to the Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee, which showed us how mining began in Michigan. It has many wonderful exhibits. From there, we visited the Historic Mill Creek in Mackinaw City, which is an old sawmill. It was very interesting to see how the first mill functioned. We also toured Fort Michilimackinac and saw how the British lived in encampment and a few reenactments.
We spent the night on Mackinac Island in the Island House. We toured the island by narrated horse drawn carriages and visited the fort to learn the history. We also visited an awesome butterfly conservatory.
The following day we went up to the Soo Locks and took a narrated boat tour through the American and the Canadian Locks. This was quite impressive to see how the locks work.
We h ad two wonderful educational filled days with our children. After learning about Michigan history in school, it was greatly enhanced by seeing the sights.
So thank you so much for your ongoing support. WE hope you will continue to do so for our future 5th grade students so they too can enjoy this great opportunity.
We would also like to thank our wonderful 5th grad teachers at Barkell Elementary who made this all possible: Mr. Dan Pertile, Mrs. Amy Pierce and Mrs. Amy Maki. Thank you for all your hard work. We were amazed at how smoothly it all went and in such a timely manner. You are all amazing teachers.
We also want to thank Mrs. Gladys Dupuis and Mrs. Tammy Bessner for their assistance on the trip.
A wonderful time was had by all.
