Day to thank law enforcement

To the editor:

As the calendar turns to January and the holidays are in the rearview mirror, many are reflecting on the previous month, and making sure they are sending out thank you notes. But our family and friends are not the only ones we should express our thanks to.

Jan. 9 is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and on that day, we should all express our gratitude to our police officers.

Michigan law enforcement officials work incredibly hard to keep us safe, and fighting meth is one of the best things they do for us.

Meth is a terrible drug that ruins lives, so we’re lucky to have law enforcement officials who take advantage of systems like the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) in the fight against it. NPLEx allows officers to identify suspicious purchases of safe and effective cold and allergy medicine containing pseudoephedrine, which can be used to make meth, and helps take meth cooks off the street.

While they deserve our appreciation every day, we should all go the extra mile in showing our gratitude for law enforcement on Jan. 9. Keeping meth out of our community isn’t the most glorious job, and that’s why we should be especially grateful this week for the dedication and commitment of Michigan law enforcement.
