Use Kitwin for 4-county facility

To the editor:

It is June 21 and the jail in Ontonagon County has reached capacity — like Houghton and Keweenaw.  The only one left is Baraga, and it is only a matter of time before it is full.  When will someone step forward and say “enough is enough.” Let’s get serious about getting Camp Kitwin’s 240-bed jail become converted into a four-county facility for these four counties?

Rumor has it that the state may help to pick up some of the expense and I am sure one of our representatives would help to get this done. People in these four counties should drive out to South Range and see this great facility, sitting empty, and….taxpayer paid for! Is there someone who will step forward and push this project?

If it is not the right thing to do for the people and law enforcement, and safety on the streets, speak now.
