In support of local roller girls
To the editor:
I am writing to highlight the ethos of a local sports league in our community in order to convey a broader point. This local league is internationally recognized. It is a league that incorporates highly skilled players demonstrating the very best of what sport has to offer all of us. These skills include cooperation, inclusiveness, tolerance, diversity, sportsmanship, athleticism, and competition.
Our very own Keweenaw Roller Girls are members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and for all of those who participate and spectate, you will witness these fierce competitors giving it their all on the track. When the clock has expired, win or lose, all participants and fans gather trackside to congratulate one another and to show their gratitude for a sport that sets such a beautiful example for the rest of us of what a community can and should be.
All of us, I believe, no matter what our political, religious or social views are, have much to learn from this example.
To wit- Engage your opponent, go around and around, and, when it is over, give a hug or a hearty handshake to show that you have spoken, but also to show that you have heard.
