Vote ‘YES’ for Renewal Millage

To the editor:

The Portage Lake District Library (PLDL) is a treasure of the Western U.P. and the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country supports a Yes vote in the Houghton City millage renewal that is scheduled on Tuesday November 7.

Books are traditional at a library, but in the 21st century, a library is so much more. PLDL hosts sessions at which Michigan Tech computer scientists help local seniors with their computer programs. When the League and other organizations seek to make educational presentations on public issues such as local transportation, the Library provides a central, comfortable, and easy to access place for the meeting. The PLDL hosts knitting nights, story time, genealogy searching, Math Club, book groups, and much, much more. Students, seniors, visitors, all sorts of neighbors find their way to the library when they have a question. The staff are informed, accessible, and eager to help. This institution needs the support of Houghton City and Portage Township residents who value having such services available to the community. Houghton residents are urged to vote Yes for the renewal of the funding of this community resource. The vote does not increase your taxes: the request is to maintain the library funding at the level that it has received for 20 years. Nonresidents may show their support by subscribing to the library at a modest cost. We can all come together to support the PLDL.
