Special ed. awards event

To the editor:

On behalf of the Parent Advisory Committee for Special Education, I would like to thank the following people who helped make our 16th annual awards program on May 15 such a great success: Sue Mewbourn, executive secretary for Special Education – her always outstanding efforts literally make our program happen; Chris Salo, retiring director of Special Education, for her support, opening remarks and years of service; George Stockero, Superintendent, for his remarks; HPTS Food Services for the delicious meal and PAC Awards Committee members: Amanda Waise, Kirsten Pietila, Lisa Casper and Bobbie Jo Holombo.

The Parent Advisory Committee for Special Education is comprised of parents of children with disabilities. We act as liaisons between the community, parents, schools, teachers and the intermediate school district. The highlight of our year is our awards program where we honor individuals and groups for outstanding contributions made in special education.

From the adult saying “I’m just doing my job.” to the fellow student stating, “I’m not doing anything special, I want to help others”, we recognize the large and small kindnesses and selfless acts that happen daily and under the radar in special education. Laughter, tears, humility, admiration and respect are hallmarks of this event.

As a parent of a child with special needs, it’s often the small things that mean the most. The caring teacher, aide, classmate, therapist, bus driver, food service worker, janitor and administrator — all contribute daily, in ways big and small, to our children’s lives.

They do so without thought of their own gain but to help and enhance the life of the student entrusted to them. There is no typical day in the classroom for students with special needs, and each day presents unique challenges.

Staff are often required to think on their feet and do so with efficiency, team work and a healthy sense of humor. Fellow students mentor and befriend our children out of kindness and compassion — never thinking they may be awarded for doing what comes naturally to them.

At a time when we are confronted daily with acts of violence, cruelty, ignorance and bias, it’s a pleasure to recognize those individuals and groups who humbly endeavor to do the right thing. The PAC extends our heartfelt thanks to our award winners who create and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion and those that nominated them.
