Renew tax for veterans

To the editor:

The Mohawk (Mich.) American Legion Post No. 230 voted unanimously to endorse a Keweenaw Countywide Veterans Millage proposal at its monthly meeting on July 9.

The Legion Post is asking Keweenaw County voters to join with its members and vote to renew the tax for veterans.

The county proposal would renew a 0.1 mill tax for veterans’ benefits. That amounts to 10-cents per $1,000 of taxable value of property. The tax for veterans would raise an estimated $14,595 the first year. The proposal would renew the tax for 10 years.

Veterans account for 15 percent of 2,105 county residents, according to the U.S. Census as of July 1, 2017. It means there are 317 veterans in Keweenaw County.

The taxes raised allow Keweenaw County to contract with the Houghton County Veteran’s Affairs Office for services to Keweenaw County veterans. That office helps veterans file for county, state, and federal benefits, including Veterans Administration benefits.

The veterans’ proposal will be decided in the Aug. 7 primary election. It will not appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 6.

That’s why members of the Mohawk American Legion Post encourage Keweenaw County voters to support this proposal in the Aug. 7 primary election. Thank you.
