Soberfest II double success

To the editor:

On Sept. 8, Soberfest II Community Potluck 2018 took place at Kestner Waterfront Park. This event brought the community together once again with the recovery community for an afternoon of friendship, fun,and activities without alcohol or substances. We doubled our participation this year to 200 attendees, and, once again, offered food, games, and live music. New this year were 2 tents: a smaller tent featuring coffee tasting, and a larger one with 4 different healthy activities, all at no cost. Superior Essential Oils was represented by Emily, Hillary demonstrated Tai Chi, Matt presented meditation, and Hannah taught us Polish line dancing. All activities were well-received.

BJ and Tom from the Print Shop personally created eye-catching fliers, rack cards, and magnets which were paid for by IR Telemetrics. Donna Berryman and Superior Equipment and Events donated games and gave us a great deal on the big tent. Kevin Weir from Dial-Help monitored the popular obstacle course. Ron and Joyce manned the coffee tent where brew-tasting was provided by Frank from 5th and Elm, Steve of Cyberia, and Clay from K.C. Bonkers. Dave’s BP in Hancock promoted Soberfest on their sign for 2 days.

Pepsi-Cola of Houghton (Chris) again sponsored Soberfest and donated pop and water. Coca-Cola (Gary) of Hancock also donated pop and water. Food donations came with attendees and from Econo Foods, Pat’s IGA, Festival Foods, Wal-Mart, root beer from KBC, and custom shirts from Chickadee’s.

We so appreciate the media promotion from Rick Allen at the Lift radio, Mary Ann from WMPL, Jennifer from WMQT (Marquette), Joyce and Steve at Eagle Radio, and the wonderful guys at KBear/The Wolf: Jeff, Kevin, and Todd. John from TV6 and Lee from WBUP Ch.10 also helped to spotlight the importance of such an event.

Rob Fritz and Scott provided live music, as well as Gary Tunstall and Randy and Keith. Chuck Bailey came through as our DJ again. We are so grateful to these talented guys.

Plans are being made for Soberfest III 2019. Thank you again to all who attended and everyone who helped make Soberfest II so successful!
