Confirmation is affront to women

To the editor:

I was pretty appalled when Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the Supreme Court, but I must say, not surprised. He was confirmed despite being “credibly accused” of sexually assaulting a young girl when he was a teenager. If he would have been reported and fairly adjudicated at that time, it would have been a crime. I was not just a case of “a boy’s hijinx that happened a long time ago.” He would have had a criminal record.

So now we have a president who has been accused of sexual assault and being recorded bragging about it; and a Supreme Court justice also credibly accused of sexual assault.

And then, Trump mocks Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, in front of a political rally, and his minions laugh and cheer. He intimates she can’t remember exactly when or where, so she must be lying, calling the whole incident a “hoax.”

Let me tell you a story about a little girl, 12 or 13 years old, being sexually abused by her uncle. This happened over 50 years ago, but she remembers exactly what happened in each incident. She does not remember exactly when, but does remember exactly where and who did it. She has not told anyone about this until now. So, by coming forward now, she should be mocked and denigrated and declared to be a liar? Oh, yes, the uncle was high on alcohol each time also.

It seems to me that some old white men want to keep the right to sexually abuse vulnerable women and girls as another white male privilege. I believe sexual abuse has been much more pervasive than anyone would like to believe, and we need to change that. Women need to speak their truth!

The ramming through of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is such an affront to women! I also believe all of these happenings are the old white men’s last gasp for power in the midst of changing demographics in this country. I think they are going to be shocked by the results of the upcoming election!
