Stand by Jewish brothers, sisters

To the editor:

As Unitarian Universalists, the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (KUUF) is horrified and dismayed by the massacre at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.  This violent act breaks every one of the principles that Unitarian Universalists live by:

•The inherent worth and dignity of every person.

•Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.

•Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.

•A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

•The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.

•The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

•Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

As a welcoming congregation, we count among our members persons who identify with the Jewish faith, as well as those who identify with Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, agnosticism and atheism.  Everyone who is on a sincere, personal, spiritual journey is an integral part of KUUF.

We believe people of all religious faiths or no religious faith have the right to worship — or not worship — freely, in peace and safety.  The UU motto is “Standing on the side of love.”

We ask that all community members of good will stand by their Jewish brothers and sisters.

The senseless shootings at Tree of Life should be condemned by all.
