Soup & Pulled Pork fundraiser

To the editor:

The Helping Hands of Keweenaw Team would like to encourage attendance at our Soup & Pulled Pork Fundraiser on Jan. 19 held at the Horizon School in Mohawk. The Saturday event runs from 11a.m.-2 p.m. and includes bake sale, 50/50 and quilt raffle.

Helping Hands of Keweenaw began in the year 2000 with a quarterly payment plan established by a family who wishes to remain anonymous. This fund covers Keweenaw and northern Houghton counties. It provides financial assistance to individuals, families or organizations serving those families. A team of 4 reviews written requests or is made aware of community needs. Then determination of how to help is made following the program’s guidelines. This is a supported outreach ministry of Bethany Lutheran Church, with funds separate from the church general funds. Our goal is to distribute all quarterly dollars each calendar year. Currently that amount annual total is $10,000 with an increase planned for 2019.

In 2015, an endowment fund was established to strengthen longevity of this mission even if the donor’s funding ends. Our team plans a fundraiser every other year. Our goal is to add to the endowment fund currently managed by Mission Investment Fund (MIF) of the Evangelical Lutheran church of America (ELCA). This year we also have the support of a Thrivent Financial Action Team grant to help with costs.

We are confident that through Helping Hands of Keweenaw, God is at work – guiding our team’s decisions. We work to be good stewards of all God’s gifts. If you wish to request assistance, call Bethany Lutheran Church (906-337-2662). A request form will be mailed to you or a team member will call you to complete the form by phone. If you wish to make donations to our program, donations may be mailed to Helping Hands of Keweenaw, c/o Bethany Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 315, Mohawk, MI 49950. We hope you join us for lunch on Jan. 19.
