Privilege to live in this area

To the editor:

On behalf of the families of Coast Guard Station Portage, I would like to thank the community for the generous support during the recent government shutdown.

The outpouring of generous donations from the community is appreciated and helped relieve some of the burden and stress that ensued due to missing a paycheck. For the majority of

the Coast Guard families, relatives are far from the UP. For some, this is the first unit they have been assigned to, and others are just starting families but all were impacted to some degree from not getting paid.

Despite the harsh conditions and remote location, it is a privilege to live in the Copper Country, which is unique and strong and was willing to help in our time of need.
