Great teachers deserve award

To the editor:

Those who dedicate their life’s work to educating students are selfless and under appreciated. As a former teacher, I know the work of an educator doesn’t end after the final bell rings each day. Teachers work round the clock, volunteer their time to assist with after-school activities and even sacrifice their own earnings to invest in teaching materials and other necessities for their students.

No matter how much we thank our teachers, it will never be enough.

That’s why one of my first actions as state representative was to launch the Outstanding Educator Award, which gives students, parents and school faculty of the 110th Michigan House District the opportunity to nominate local educators who have made a meaningful impact on their communities.

Three outstanding educators will be selected to receive an official state tribute recognizing their exceptional work and dedication.

The program runs through May 1. I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of fantastic submissions we’ve already received. To submit your nomination, visit RepMarkkanen.com and click on the “Outstanding Educator Award” tab at the top of the page.

I’ve worked with so many individuals throughout my education career who deserve the highest praise. Every school has special teachers like these. I look forward to recognizing the impact of just a few of these impeccable educators from our communities.
