Riff — RIFF — in popular music and jazz, a short repeated phrase, usually played over and over in variations

Example: "In The Week's art column it was metaphorically stated that 'Jessica Rath's latest series is a riff on the fact that the Galas & Granny Smiths are not the product of natural selection, but genetically engineered cultural objects.'"
