Self-abnegation — self AB-nee-GAY-shun — the degradation of oneself

Example: "In a New Yorker article looking back at the rise and fall of Illinois' former governor Rod Blagojevich, David Mendell commented: 'He was a man willing to make himself preposterous, has been part of his curious strategy, as if smiling self-abnegation indicated innocence; and yet he told his radio audience, 'I fear no man.'"
