Vilify — VIL-ih-FIE — referencing someone or something in an unpleasant, abusively disparaging manner
Example: "With reference to the public reaction when a woman claimed her child was dragged away by a wild dog, 'Australians continued to vilify the grieving mother, even when it turned out it was a wild dog after all.'"
