brinkmanship - BRINK-man-ship - pursuing a dangerous policy (usually in politics) to the limits of safety before stopping

Example: "After hearing the president's speech tonight, David Brooks commented negatively about the follow-up, over NPR": 'Why should we think his comments will make any difference; more likely, there will just be more squabbling and brinkmanship, more posturing and punting...'"
