acrid - AK-rid - sharp or bitter in taste or smell; having an intense, irritating unpleasant taste or smell
Example: "David Denby, in his NYer review of "Gatsby," comments on an ugly scene in a Manhattan hotel: 'In its acrid way, the episode is satirical, but an abyss slowly opens. Some small expectation of grace has vanished.'"
