Medi-gap insurance crucial
To the editor: If you are a senior citizen, you have struggled with the decision about your health insurance. It’s very confusing. You have Medicare that you pay $96.50 a month out of your social security. Now, you need a drug plan because the government says you do. Drugs are expensive, so it is good for those who need them. On the TV, you’re constantly being told it would be to your advantage to sign up for an all-inclusive Advantage Plan that covers drugs as well as doctors and hospital costs. Believe me, when I tell you it is not to your advantage. Here’s why: 1. The Advantage Plan replaces Medicare, but you still pay for Medicare and it does you no good. This cancels Medicare benefits. 2. Advantage Plans charge co-pays to see a doctor or go to the hospital: $30, $40 or $50 for each visit. 3. The Advantage Plan costs about $60 a month. They decide what they pay for. 4. If you were to need dialysis, my plan had $50 co-pay per visit. That could be $600 per mont.
