Franzen scores twice, Wings beat Wild, 5-1
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings started and finished strong.
Johan Franzen scored twice, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and two assists in Detroit’s 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.
Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist, and Drew Miller also scored, and Jimmy Howard made 21 saves for Detroit, ninth in the Western Conference — a point behind Nashville and Calgary.
The Red Wings have sometimes started slowly this season and have blown a few third-period leads.
‘‘I thought we got started on time and played 60 minutes,’’ Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
The Red Wings lost 4-2 to Calgary on Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena. They let a 2-1 third-period lead slip away in that game.
‘‘We thought about that and made sure we didn’t make any mistakes,’’ Franzen said. ‘‘We always had three guys back.’’
Andrew Ebbett scored for Minnesota, and Josh Harding stopped 25 shots.
