Your neighborhood bank

HANCOCK — Superior National Bank customers will soon have drive up banking services in Houghton.

The bank is excited to announce that they are opening a new branch office off of M-26 near Applebee’s.

“We recognized the need to expand our bank services in the Houghton area,” said Judy Usitalo, vice president of human resources/marketing for Superior National. “We have many Houghton customers who like to use our drive through facilities and they’ll make a special trip to Hancock just to do that. It’s important to us to meet that requirement and need that they have.”

Usitalo said Superior National will be moving from its current Copper Country Mall location into a new office in the Ridgecrest Plaza, a new strip mall under construction by Moyle Inc. The strip mall will be located near Wal-Mart and Applebee’s and will have space for a total of six businesses. The new branch will be more than 2,500 square feet in size and will have safe deposit boxes, two drive-up banking lanes and a 24-hour drive-up ATM.

“This state-of-the-art facility will also include a drive through automatic cash dispensing machine which means fast service,” Usitalo said.

The new branch office — tentatively set for an Aug. 1 opening — will have business hours six days a week, including Saturday loan hours.

Superior National has hired Ross Cooney of Houghton as the new branch manager and loan officer. Cooney, a graduate of Michigan Technological University, brings 12 years of banking experience to the business.

Cooney began as a lender with D&N Bank, which became Republic Bank and later Citizen’s Bank. More recently, Cooney was the office/branch manager of Citizen’s Houghton branch, receiving the honor of “Highest Consumer Loan Total Manager.” Additionally, Cooney received the “Director’s Award” and was recognized several times for “Outstanding Performance” by the bank president.

For the past year, Cooney has held the position of Major Gifts Officer with Michigan Tech. He will be leaving that position to join Superior National in May.

Superior National Bank President Willis Fontaine said, “We are very excited about bringing our banking services to a new level in the Houghton area. It’s something we’ve looked forward at for a very long time. With the addition of Ross Cooney, we will now have full-time loan services, 6-day banking, a state-of-the-art drive-thru and a beautiful new office to serve our customers. Now that’s exciting.”

Additional offices at the new Houghton branch will allow for future growth, Usitalo added.

“We’re confident that the office will see expansion,” she said.

Superior National Bank is the only locally owned and operated bank in the area. And, it’s the largest independent bank in the Upper Peninsula.

Superior National Bank was founded in 1890. It has assets of $305 million and 9 offices throughout Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga counties. Branch locations include Mohawk, Calumet, Lake Linden, Hancock, Chassell, Baraga and Houghton.
