Helen Shirley (Wendell) Kaario
BUTTE, Mont. - Helen Shirley (Wendell) Karrio, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 26, 2008 in Butte, Mont.
Helen was born March 3, 1924, in Copper City, to Isaac and Ida (Wilson) Wendell.
Helen moved to Butte, Mont. as a little girl with her family for work in the mining industry.
In 1946, she married Matthew “Matti” Kaario who was a native of the Copper Country. He was born in Baltic in 1915.
Helen and Matti were loving parents of nine wonderful children. In 1983, Helen and Matti moved back to the Copper Country after he retired from mining. They resided in Atlantic Mine until Matti passed away in 1993.
In 2000 Helen traveled to visit all of her kids.
Helen loved to make pasties and play pinochle and poker machines. She also loved shuffleboard. She got the name “Hanger Helen” by those who knew she could play the game.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband, Matti; son, Ron Kaario; sons-in-law, Melvin Gillespie and Ron Frank and five grandchildren; and in memory, her close friend, Arne Mulari.
Surviving are her sister, Mae Jensen of Missoula, Mt.; children, Lynn (Chuck) Walter of Orangeville, Ind., Ann (Virg) Atkins, Willie Kaario, Darlene (John) Marjamaa, Debbie (Ron) Marjamaa, Tammy (Troy) Jackson, all of Butte, Laurie (Chris) Kaario of Spokane, Wash, Patty (Mike) Maatta, Becky (Chad) Mulari of Painesdale, Jessica (Ron) Luukkonen of Atlantic Mine; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen had many friends in the Copper Country and will be greatly missed by all.
