ONTONAGON — So maybe the Houghton girls were missing a couple of their top runners.

Even without these top performers present, the Gremlins still raced their way to victory at the Ontonagon Invitational Thursday.

Houghton finished first in one team and three individual events. The Gremlins took the top spot in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4 minutes, 45.66 seconds.

Natalie Berryman had the best day individually for Houghton. Berryman picked up a pair of wins in the field events.

She took the shot with a toss of 33-11 and won the discus with a throw of 97-0. Teammate Rachel Crane picked up the other victory for Houghton, winning the 200 in a time of 29.06.

“Some younger girls got a chance to place here,” Houghton coach Ross Coltman said. “It’s a little smaller field with only four teams so that gives them some confidence.

“We’re missing a couple of our top runners, Carrie Yarina and Kelly Lufkin, but some other girls picked it up so I’m very pleased.”

Calumet also had a good day on the girls side. The Copper Kings won a total of nine events to finish second behind the Gremlins.

Kathleen Helminen and Kara Rastello had two wins apiece for Calumet. Helminen won the 800 (2:30.28) and the long jump (14-3 3/4) while Rastello took the top spot in the high jump (4-10) and the 400 (1:04.70).

The Copper Kings also won two of the four relay events. Calumet captured the 3,200 in 11:21.82 and won the 800 in 1:59.86.

The Copper Kings had an even better result on the boys side. Calumet won 12 events to finish first with 294 points.

The Copper Kings swept the relay events. Calumet won the 3,200 in 9:26.33, the 800 in 1:40.10, the 400 in 48.13, and the 1,600 in 4:06.51.

James Loukus and Matt Rastello had two wins apiece individually for the Copper Kings. Loukus won both the pole vault (10-0) and the 110 hurdles (17.25) while Rastello took home the top spot in the 200 (24.21) and the 100 (11.87).

Four other runners picked up firsts for Calumet. Nate Sturos won the 1,600 (5:19.09), Brad Anderson took the 800 (2:10.43), Nels Anderson won the 3,200 (11:10.00) and David Helminen took the discus (119-04).

“A lot of kids got their personal bests,” Calumet coach John Croze said of the day. “It’s unfortunate we had to cancel the meet (earlier this year) because there is usually a lot of great competition down here.

“There weren’t a whole lot of people down here, but it was a heckuva a lot better than being at practice.”
