Pulling out all the stops

May 14, 2008
The Daily Mining Gazette
DOLLAR BAY — If you’ve ever wanted to try out a piece of outdoor power equipment, now’s your chance.

Ward’s Husqvarna in Dollar Bay is pulling out all the stops and setting up a complete line of product demonstrations for customers during customer appreciation days this Friday and Saturday. Customer appreciation/Demo days will be held during regular business hours — 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

“I get a lot of customers that come in and maybe want to try something but they don’t, so I thought this would be a way for them to do that,” business owner Ward Erickson said, adding there will be hourly drawings for apparel and products each day. “If there’s something that you’ve ever wanted to try out or you’re looking to buy, stop in.”

Erickson said he will have two separate tent canopies set up outside the shop. One tent will be dishing up sloppy joes, chips, donuts, coffee and pop and the other will be holding chainsaw demonstrations.

“We’re going to have a Husqvarna representative on hand to answer any product questions,” he added. “He will also be demonstrating the performance and showing their new features.”

Easy start up and tool-less chain adjusters are some of the advanced features of chainsaws today, Erickson said, and the Husqvarna representative will be showing those and additional other features as well.

Also featuring a no-hassle start are the walk-behind lawn mowers that customers can try out.

“There’s no choke. All you do is pull it,” Erickson said. “Some are electric start. You just turn the key.”

Tillers, pressure washers, blowers, trimmers and wood-splitters will also be on hand.

“We’ll have the fast-cycle model as well as wood splitters with vertical or horizontal splitting options,” Erickson said.

Ward’s is the area’s Husqvarna and STIHL dealer. While chainsaws and light lawn and garden equipment continue to make up a large portion of the business, Erickson said he’s expanded their inventory quite a bit over the years. Since he purchased the business in July of 2001, Erickson tacked on Bercomac snowthrowers, lawn and garden/ATV and rotary brushes, and, Erskine Attachments/Skid Steer/Compact tractors. Ward’s Husqvarna offers one of the biggest selections of Gates hydraulic hoses, fittings and adapters.

Additional products include Cant hooks, log jacks, pick axes, chains, binders, hooks, lifting tongs, high visibility vests and rain gear, among others.

Ward’s Husqvarna services all makes and models of power equipment, including compact tractor repair.

“We stock a lot of parts for other products as well,” Erickson said. “And we do offer pick up and delivery.”

Ward’s Husqvarna offers free delivery on new products within a 20-mile radius. Not only does the delivery ensure the product will arrive safely, Erickson said he gets to show the customer one-on-one how the product operates.

“I go through the machine from front to back. We take a look at safety, check the fluids and I can answer any questions,” he said.

Customers are also topped with either a new hat or t-shirt with a new purchase.

Customer satisfaction is what’s most important to the team at Ward’s Husqvarna.

“My goal is satisfied customers,” Erickson said, adding what separates them from box stores is they keep products out on display and ready for customers to use to ensure they’re in working order when they leave the shop. “We help provide the proper equipment for the job or project. Our golden rule is that when you leave here, we know that the product works and that you know how to operate it.”

And, the customer satisfaction shows. For the past two years, Ward’s Husqvarna has been voted the number one lawn/garden equipment dealer, as well as the number one snow removal equipment dealer by the readers of The Daily Mining Gazette.

Erickson said he couldn’t maintain the high level of quality service for customers without his team of employees, which include sales/mechanic Jeff Wiitala, office manager Jeni Hammerstrom and assembly/janitor Braden Hammerstrom.

“If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “My four sons help out around the shop, too.”
