Ingestion of toxic substance

By KURT HAUGLIE, DMG Writer
POSTED: May 19, 2008

HOUGHTON — There is no new information regarding an apparent toxic substance ingested by a Michigan Technological University student Tuesday, but the incident is still under investigation by Tech Public Safety.

Bonnie Gorman, Tech executive director of marketing and communications, said the student who ingested the substance isn’t being identified while the investigation is ongoing, and neither is the substance.

“The police have asked us not to release that because of the investigation,” Gorman said.

The student, who was initially treated at Marquette General Hospital, said that he became ill after he was given an energy drink by a stranger Tuesday morning, but it’s unknown if the toxic substance was in the drink.

Gorman said she’s unaware of the student’s condition or if he’s still in the hospital.
