“They sell a good product and they can be trusted,” the pair commented while browsing the showroom. “When you can leave your home and trust the people to do the work when you’re not there, that means a lot.”
Keweenaw Glass & Door, located on North 11th Street in west Calumet, offers a wide range of quality products and installation services for all window and door projects big or small. A portion of the business involves flat glass repair — such as tempered safety glass and tabletop — as well as screen repair, custom mirrors, custom shower doors and window repair.
“People can bring in their windows whether it’s insulated or single glazed,” owner Ken Johnson said. “We also sell and install windows and doors.”
Keweenaw Glass & Door is the area’s Weather Shield dealer, one of the nation’s leading window and door manufacturers. To provide additional options for customers, Johnson said they’ve recently added three additional window and door lines including Timeline Vinyl, Lincoln Wood Products and Peachtree Doors.
“Peachtree was bought out by Weather Shield so it was an easy transition for us,” Johnson said. “With Peachtree, there’s more options on the door — different decorative glass — and both fiber glass and steel entry doors are available.” The Lincoln Wood Products line, Johnson added, is based in central Wisconsin and has been in business for more than 60 years.
“They’ve been around for quite a long time,” he said.
With summer just around the corner, customers can drop into Keweenaw Glass & Door for a variety of SunSetter retractable awnings. By providing shade over decks and windows, the SunSetter awnings can reduce customers’ cooling costs as well as provide a comfortable climate anywhere they’re used.
“The awnings are retractable. They go in and out either manually or with a remote,” Johnson said. “They can be installed over decks or large windows that get a lot of heat. And, they reduce the heat on your deck up to 20 degrees.”
SunSetter awnings range in size from 9 feet up to 18 feet in one-foot increments and can be taken down in the off season.
“They’re really easy to take in and out,” Johnson added.
Keweenaw Glass & Door makes it easy for homeowners to select a style to fit their home. The showroom offers a full display of shower doors, all brands of windows they sell and an operating awning for customers to try out.
This time of year is when business picks up, Johnson said, noting they offer free estimates.
The three full-time installers have 30 years of combined experience in windows and doors. Two of them have been with the business for more than 10 years.
Office manager, Tom Johnson (no relation to Ken), has been with the business for 7 years. The crew also includes a seasonal secretary.
“We’re proud to be a full-service, local business,” Ken Johnson said, adding they offer free on-site service and the coverage area spans from Copper Harbor to Ontonagon to L’Anse.
Keweenaw Glass & Door started back in 1990 out of Johnson’s home. It was primarily an auto glass business Johnson operated on his own. In 2000, he moved the business to its current location in Calumet.
