The Cause and Effect of Shopping Locally

July 9, 2008
The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Spending locally is about more than just keeping the money within the community, local business owner Ron Rea says.

"We are supporting our neighbors, friends and family," he explained. "We are building a strong community that we can all be proud to be a part of."

When Rea opened The Office Shop in Calumet 13 years ago, he had one vision in mind: to offer customers the best service possible at the best price possible everyday - period.

Today, Rea continues to build on his vision and is pleased to announce a new "Market Penetration Pricing Structure."

"Market penetration pricing means that the majority of items in the 25,000-item catalog are clearly marked with the lowest price in the industry. No games. No gimmicks," Rea said. "You will be able to compare our prices to anyone. They will speak for themselves."

Not only will the prices speak for themselves, he said, but they will remain the same low price throughout the rest of the year.

"That is correct! The price you pay right now will remain that low price all year long," Rea reassured.

The catalog is free and can be picked up at The Office Shop, located at 218 Fifth St. For customers who are unable to drop by the store, Rea said he will personally deliver the catalog to them free of charge. Call 337-2210.

The same great savings can be found at The Office Shop. Every item in the store has the same low price that's in the catalog.

"You will not pay more for the item because it is in stock," Rea said. "We will do our best to make sure that your business runs as smoothly as possible. The best price, service and the commitment to make a difference every day. We are here for you."

The Office Shop also has faxing services available. Rea said they can send and receive faxes for customers.

"Our dedicated fax line receives faxes 24 hours a day," he said.

While The Office Shop is known for its vast assortment of office supplies, that's not all it has to offer. Customers will always find the perfect card and decorations for that special event.

"When you want helium balloons, we deliver, dozens of colors to choose from," Rea said. "Do you know someone who is turning 30, 40, or more? We have that perfect over-the-hill gift for you, guaranteed to make you smile!"

Rea said he is thankful for his many loyal customers who have provided much support in helping to make his business a success.

"Over the years, your choice to support The Office Shop has helped one man's vision become a reality," he said of his son, Marc, who worked for him for several years. "I was very fortunate to have him working by my side. He became a man right in front of my eyes."

Unfortunately, Rea said Marc had to leave the area a few years ago because of a lack of jobs in the area. He was away for a year and a half, but his heart never left the area.

Marc has since returned to the area and became a partner with father and son, Jim and Mike LaMotte, at Fitzgerald's in Eagle River. Rea noted Jim has several years of experience in the restaurant and lodging industry.

"You take that experience with the excitement and passion of two smart and hard working young men and you have an amazing and entertaining night out," he said.

The dollars customers have spent at The Office Shop planted the seed that grew into Fitzgerald's being a valuable asset to the community, Rea continued.

"If you have not yet had the pleasure to visit Fitzgerald's you are missing out on a very special evening. You will get more than you expect! Fine dining and a very comfortable atmosphere!" Rea said. "I take my hat off to Jim, Mike and my son Marc. They are focused on what is important ... the customer and the community! Marc, I am proud of the man that you have become."

The choice to support all local businesses whenever possible makes good cents, Rea said. "Sorry, a little play on words there. Seriously, every dollar that is spent in the community has a major impact on all of our lives here. I for one am very grateful for your support," he said. "Thank you for supporting all of the local businesses in the area. It really does make a difference."

The Office Shop is located at 218 Fifth St. in Calumet. The extended business hours for customers' convenience is 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 337-2210.
