C-L-K, other Calumet locations vandalized
Authorities suspect youth are involvedBy GARRETT NEESE, DMG Writer
CALUMET - Area law enforcement agencies are investigating several vandalism incidents in Calumet.
At about 1:15 this morning, Houghton County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a breaking and entering at C-L-K Elementary School and Washington Middle School.
The person or persons involved gained access by breaking several windows.
The extent of the damage is not known at this time, said Sgt. Chuck Cadwell.
The Michigan State Police Calumet post is investigating several breaking and entering incidents from Thursday morning.
Plants left outside the Pamida store on display stands were knocked over. At Sacred Heart Church, someone broke one of the entry doors, but didn't gain entry to the building, said MSP Sgt. Jason Wickstrom. A block away, a vehicle's windshield was broken, though no items were stolen, Wickstrom said.
Neither Cadwell nor Wickstrom was sure if there was any link between the incidents, or to breaking and entering incidents earlier this week.
"I can't say for sure, but there's a group of juveniles and kids in their late teens that are in the area, and more than likely they're involved in this ... there's a chance," Wickstrom said.
The sheriff's department was assisted by Laurium and Calumet police along with the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Department.
Anyone with information on the C-L-K break-in should contact the Houghton County Sheriff's Department at 482-0055. With information on the other vandalism incidents, contact the Michigan State Police at 337-5145.
