Fight against Taliban must continue
When Afghans celebrated their Independence Day last year, they did so in public with observances such as parades.
Last week, the only official celebration was one held inside a fortified military compound. Afghan officials explained that public events were canceled because of the possibility of terrorist attacks by the Taliban.
Clearly, the Taliban and their al-Qaida allies are stronger in Afghanistan than they have been for years. Evidence of that comes in attacks on U.S. and other forces trying to keep the peace, and in atrocities committed against Afghans.
Military activity against the terrorists needs to be increased. The Taliban were beaten once in Afghanistan - but now they need to be eradicated.

This is now the war that never ends. 146,000 troops in Iraq and 53,000 headed for Afghanistan. And it will likely take a force of more than 100,000 troops to hope to have a CHANCE at victory in Afghanistan! They were able to kill more than 15,000 russian troops and DEFEAT a force of 114,000 of Russia's best leaving 75,000 wounded! We will soon likely see more than 250,000 troops deployed in the middle east. And with Iran threatening nuclear capability, Russia on the verge of attacking neighboring countries, and Pakistan on the edge of attacking our troops for invading their country, we will soon not have enough troop strength left to defend our Nation from invasion let alone wage a MAJOR war in the against Russia or Iran!

From what I've read the Taliban are more entrenched, stronger, and more numerous now than they were when they came to everybody's attention during the weeks after 9/11. Bush's decision to focus troops, resources, and monies to overthrown Saddem Hussein instead of going after the true culprits of 9/11 was collusion verging on treason. Now the Islamic fascists are emboldened and strengthened thanks to the foolish Bush policies!

Let's pause for a moment to remember that - in the early years of the Reagan Adminstration - the US armed & trained so-called Afghan Freedom Fighters (that's the Taliban) to fight against the Soviets. Historically, the Taliban wasn't so much defeated, as armed and modernized, by the US. Now we want to fight terrorism. Is that the reason we've been engaged in an ethnically-charged, ethically-void civil war in Iraq while the Taliban, al-Qaeda and other assorted violent, hate-based extremists have been gathering, training, and organizing along the Pakistani-Afghan border? "Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it." - Sir Winston Churhill.
