H & R Block offers bookkeeping, payroll services

HOUGHTON - H & R Block is lightening the workload for small-business owners with the addition of bookkeeping and payroll services. Come and get the details during their open house.

"Up until now, people have associated H & R Block with taxes," said Karen Mattfolk, business service agent and tax professional for H & R Block of Houghton. "But now we're offering year-round bookkeeping and payroll services for small businesses."

To introduce their new services to the community, they will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Houghton office located at 903 Razorback Drive, Suite 8, next to The Shipping Shop.

Robin Raffaelli, franchisee of H & R Block of Houghton, L’Anse and Calumet, is seen outside the Houghton location recently.

"Small business owners that visit during the open house will be given a gift while supplies last, and others can register for prizes and enjoy some refreshments," she said.

Mattfolk said H & R Block was formerly located on Shelden Avenue in downtown Houghton before moving to the Razorback Centre in January. Her daughter, Robin Raffaelli, is the franchisee. Robin has two additional H & R Block offices in Calumet and L'Anse, and has been with H & R Block for nine years.

Karen, who holds a BBA in accounting, brings more than 25 years of accounting experience to the business, and said their new bookkeeping service will allow them to help businesses keep on top of their financial records.

"They can keep up on their books within a monthly or quarterly basis rather than being surprised at the end of the year," she said.

Full bookkeeping is offered which includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, bank reconciliation, payroll and the associated payroll tax forms, and W-2's. Software is provided to the business owner, at no additional cost, if they want to manage the checking account entry themselves, but retain H & R Block as their bookkeeper.

The in-house computer program H & R Block utilizes integrates with QuickBooks accounting software.

"QuickBooks is the software that a lot of people are using," Karen said. "So, for those who have been doing their own bookkeeping, and are feeling overwhelmed, the QuickBooks information can easily be converted to the new program. Sometimes the burden of doing your own books gets to be a bit overwhelming as it takes away from your spare time at home or with family. A full time bookkeeper may be more affordable than you think, just call us for a quick quote."

H & R Block offers many services for clients and non-H & R Block clients including Audit Services and Second Look. With the Audit Services, their goal is to provide year-round service to clients who require assistance.

If you receive a letter from the IRS or State, they are there to assist you in determining if their adjustment is accurate and provide any follow up communication on the matter. For the Second Look, any of the three offices can review your current year return as well as up to the past three years returns to ensure they were done correctly.

During the review process clients are given tax planning advice for future years. Each return reviewed is then guaranteed by H & R Block as to its accuracy for the $29 fee (see office for details).

If there are significant changes suggested, you may choose to have H & R Block do the return for you, or to amend a prior year in which case current preparation fees would apply.

Karen said, at the local H & R Blocks their tax professionals complete a 12-week class on tax preparation prior to being hired and are required to take a number of continuing education credits annually to retain their employment with the company. By requiring the continuing education, their tax professionals are up to date on any new tax laws, or changes.

Karen said, "throughout the year, H & R Block provides us continual updates on changes on a daily basis." Updates are also provided at the annual H & R Block Convention each fall.

"They update you on the new changes and tax laws so that you can give customers the biggest deductions and refund they are legally entitled to," she said.

Karen and Robin will be attending this year's convention in Orlando, Fla. later this month. H & R Block also offers tax schools to those interested in doing their own returns, or those wanting to be considered for a job with H & R Block. The 12-week class covers all income, adjustments, credits and taxes that appear on the Federal and Michigan 1040. A class is currently going on now, and is full, but may be offered again next year.

Don't forget to visit them during their open house Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

H & R Block is located in Houghton at 903 Razorback Drive, Suite 8, next to The Shipping Shop. Currently during the off tax season, business hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. During the tax season, Jan. 1 through April 15, H & R Block will have extended hours with some evening and weekend appointment times. Special appointments are also available.
