ATLANTIC MINE - Jeffers' Jonathan Kilpela completed his perfect regular season with a win at the Copper Country Conference Championship Thursday. Conference MVP Kilpela ran a time of 17 minutes, 27 seconds to take first place.
Yet Kilpela's victory was not enough for Jeffers to top Chassell, who placed six runners in the top 10 to get a three-point victory on the boys side. Joel Kangas, Joe Larson and Troy Ryynanen took spots three through five to lead the Panthers. A.J. Yokie took runner-up to teammate Kilpela.
On the girls side, Chassell's Allison Fallon (20:52) won the race by nearly a minute to take the title, as well as Copper Country Conference MVP honors. Jeffers' Brittany Puska and Miranda Aho finished second and third, respectively, while Chassell's Nikki LeClaire and Jeffers' Jamie Puuri rounded out the top five.
The Jets ended up with the conference championship, defeating the Panthers by seven points.
