Health care is topic of Rock the Vote event
By LAYLA ASLANI, DMG WriterHOUGHTON - One of the hottest political issues of the season, health care, will be discussed at Michigan Technological University.
Michigan Tech's Rock the Vote, a non-partisan student organization, will show Michael Moore's documentary "Sicko" tonight at 6 p.m. in Fisher Hall room 135. On Tuesday, the group will host a Health Care Information Session with medical care professionals answering questions and discussing the state of health care in America. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in room U115 of the Minerals and Materials Engineering Building. Panelists include Portage Health Chief Executive Officer Jim Bogan, BlueSky Health President Jeffrey Huotari, Portage Health Chief Medical Officer Kirk Lufkin, Tech Benefits Administrator Renee Hiller as well as Tech international students.
Event organizer Chris Anderson said the event will offer different viewpoints on health care.
He said Lufkin supports universal health care, while Huotari, whose office offers alternative billing for people without insurance, does not believe it is the answer.
Anderson said "Sicko" is considered a liberal movie, but that his group balances out events by hosting both liberal and conservative viewpoints.
He noted that the group brought conservative speaker Ben Shapiro to campus in September.
