McCain is best choice for America
No election in recent memory has occurred during a period when Americans were as concerned about the economy - about whether they will be able to put bread on the table next year or even next month - as they are now.
If your decision on how to cast your ballot for president is being made out of such concern, your vote should go to Sen. John McCain. His pledges for action to help American families promise real help - not just bigger, more expensive government. His record proves that he understands the economy.
In fact, it is clear that McCain understands economic issues far better than does his opponent for the presidency, Sen. Barack Obama. That was proven in 2005 and 2006 - when McCain and three other senators tried to avert the financial crisis that is occurring now.
McCain was one of just three co-sponsors of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. The chief sponsor was Sen. Charles Hagel, R-Neb. Other co-sponsors were Sens. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., and John Sununu, R-N.H.
Their proposal was an attempt to curb the excesses of the mortgage giants "Fannie Mae" and "Freddie Mac."
In supporting the bill, McCain told his fellow lawmakers of outrageous abuses committed by "Fannie Mae" and "Freddie Mac" executives. He added, "If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that 'Fannie Mae' and 'Freddie Mac' pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole."
But few listened. Obama, then beginning his term in the Senate, joined with other liberals in rejecting any consideration of the bill.
For the quarter-century that he has served in Congress, McCain has been a staunch, active proponent of the idea that the cost of government ought to be reduced - and that Americans ought to be able to keep more of their hard-earned dollars instead of sending them to Washington, D.C.
McCain wants a temporary freeze on increases in government spending, except for national security and the care of our veterans. While it is in effect, McCain wants to go through the federal budget, item by item, slashing away at waste. Tens of billions of dollars a year can be saved.
Obama's economic policies can be summed up in two points:
First, he wants to expand the size of government tremendously. Despite his populist promises, that will mean higher taxes for most Americans. "The rich" simply don't have enough money, even if Obama took it all, to fund his expansion.
Second, Obama's view of the current crisis is flawed. He refuses to blame the laws, passed by liberals in Congress, that encouraged abuses regarding mortgages. His idea is simply to impose more bureaucratic regulations on financial institutions without addressing the root cause of the problem.
McCain, as we have seen, attempted to forestall the crisis in 2005 and 2006. Obama and other liberals blocked him. In effect, they deserve a major share of the blame for the crisis.
By reining in irresponsible financial institutions, cutting the size of government, and providing relief for all taxpayers, McCain will provide a shot in the arm for the economy.
Though there are many reasons to vote for McCain, that one alone ought to be enough. We urge thoughtful, concerned area residents to vote for McCain for president, in an attempt to get the economy moving again.

Move along folks, there is nothing to see here. The election is over. Intrade dot com has the betting odds of a McCain victory at 15 percent. If you think McCain can beat the odds you can retire a rich man. Bet the farm, baby. Here is a news flash. Neither Obama nor McCain are economists. They wouldn't know the Bretton Woods Accord from a Honda Accord. As fun as it might be to simply blame democrats for this crisis this is a problem of "layered irresponsibility with hard-working homeowners and billionaire villains each playing a role" The US economy is very complicated screwing it up to this dimension takes a great deal of cooperation from the Fed, home buyers, congress and the mortgage tax deduction, real estate agents, Clinton, brokers, Greenspan, Wall Street, Bush, accounting rules and a collective delusion about home prices.

The DMG is just following the company's (Ogden press)rightwing slant/line...from the AP:McCain was endorsed by The Daily Press (Escanaba, Mich.) on Oct. 16, The Daily Mining Gazette (Houghton, Mich.) on Oct. 16 and The Mining Journal (Marquette, Mich.) on Oct. 19. The papers are part of the Ogden Newspapers chain:This editorial is from the Wheeling Intelligencer fishwrap, although it is under another title(still unclear why that is)

I should not be surprised that the DMG would endorse McCain for president, considering the paper's support of G.W. in past elections and its conservative right-wing voice. But I guess part of me hoped that maybe with this very important election, something would be different. Considering the unlikely endorsements that Obama has received from republicans like Colin Powell and the disastrous policies of the Bush administration, it is clear that we need a change in the White House, and Obama is that change. Please take some time to read up on Sen. McCain. This recent article in Rolling Stone looks back on his life and reveals some very interesting aspects of his character. ***********rollingstone****/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain I once had respect for Sen. McCain, but that respect has diminished greatly. From his negative attacks on Obama, to his shifting policy beliefs and his insane choice of Sarah Palin - he is NOT the right choice for America.

But Obama voted with the liberal democrats 100% of the time. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think many yoopers are the products of the corrupt Chicago political machine. Also, McCain is being honest about his views, and explains why he has those views. Obama's position changes quite often, which is my biggest issue with him. He's trying to adjust his positions to what he feels the majority of Americans want to hear. I'd vote for a guy who I don't agree with, but is honest about his views versus the guy who is either pandering to voters, or ashamed of his political views

I'm with you Deb. Couldn't have said it better myself. Yousta-Be-A-Yooper and a "Copper Miner's Daughter". Some may even say I am upper middle class now. But what ever, I will always be a Copper Miner's Daughter, and I don't ever forget my roots! Of course my vote is for Obama! We don't need another 4 years like the last 8 years. Obama/Biden ticket, change we can live with! Patricia Korby Dickow

All we have to do is look at the last 8 years...and remember McCain voted with W 90% of the time. When we take a good look at our ranking in the world in many areas we know we need change and more of the same is not it. Obama has lived the lifestyle that many of the Yoopers and the rest of the lower to middle class people in this country have. He does not own so many houses he can remember the number. He recognizes the "small people". My vote is with him and Senator Biden.

I have family in the Chicago area and the things they say about Obama. American better look closer at this guy than the 30 min campaign adds that CBS, NBC and ABC give him every day at 6:30 pm. No McCain is not the best choice but at least he wont destroy the foundation of this country, for those of u wondering its the Constitution. Better do some heavy thinking on Obama's tax plan to cuz it don't raise taxes just on those making over 250,000 a year. It is a tax increase on those that fall in the 0-250,000 too.

Adventure, you equate patriotism with the wearing of a lapel flag pin? As far as why you should vote an Obama ticket- you won't but there are tens of millions of Americans who will. These are the folks that haven't been duped by extremist fear and hate mongers and have a better vision for America than do the brain-dead sheep that follow Limbaugh's lies and racist rhetoric!

Why should we elect Obama? This guy believes in socialism ("spread the wealth around"), believes in gun control (Brady Campaign endorsement), apparently is anti-hunting (endorsed by HSUS, the largest anti-hunting/animal rights group in the country), refuses to wear and American pin on his coat, refuses to place his hand over is heart during the national anthem. Again, why should I vote for this guy?

The ship S.S. Karl Rove is listing dangerously to starboard and taking on water. The right-wing rats are agitated-gnawing their neighbor's tails, squealing in desperation, clawing and scratching to be the first through the porthole and into the churning waters. The fear mongering rumors and lies continue to be stimulus enough to promp the paniced rats to fight their way out of the foundering ship and plop like anchors into the darkening seas. The shining vessel, S.S. Obama, is on the horizon but the rats are afraid of its approach and would rather take their chances in shark infested waters rather than wait for rescue. So be it!
