HANCOCK - The first baby of the new year has arrived.
Brea Jane Hammerstrom was born at 10:48 p.m. Monday at Portage Health to parents Kristi and Dwight Hammerstrom of Atlantic Mine.
"Everything went well," Kristi said, adding that the baby weighed in at 5 pounds, 15 ounces.
The couple said Kristi's due date was Jan. 8 and they were surprised to learn Brea was the first baby born in 2009 in the area.
"I was shocked when they said (she was the first of the new year), because it was almost a week," Kristi said. "I didn't really think it was an option."
Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium has not reported any births for this year.
For having the first baby, the couple will receive an engraved pewter baby cup from Miller's Jewelry & Gifts. They also got a gift basket from Portage Health.
Brea is the Hammerstrom's second child. Fourteen-month-old Josie will meet her new sister later this morning, the couple said.
