We don't think it is too much to ask to request that money from the $787 billion "stimulus" bill passed by Congress be kept from helping illegal immigrants. Liberal leaders in Congress apparently don't agree.
At one point, the House version of the bill contained a provision requiring that those who receive money from the "stimulus" program check to ensure new employees are not illegal immigrants. A simple check through the government's own E-Verify system was all that was required.
But when the bill passed, that provision had been removed from it.
U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, was among those outraged that the provision was cut. He asked, "If the goal is to create jobs and stimulate the American economy, then is it too much to ask that the jobs go to U.S. citizens and legal immigrant workers?"
Apparently it was.
