HOUGHTON - Giving the family dog a bath has never been more easy, thanks to Houghton's new self-serve pet wash.

Designed with the pet owner and K-9 companion in mind, Uncle Andy's Pet Wash provides a hassle-free alternative to bathing pets in the family bath tub or kitchen sink.

The walk-in facility, located at the Wash Depot on Sharon Avenue, features a waist-high stainless steel tub and non-slip rubber-lined ramp for easy pet access. Customers can wash their pets comfortably in a secure environment.

Much like a self-serve car wash, pet owners control the wash selection (rinse, shampoo, conditioner, odor control, blow dry and disinfect) from start to finish using a dial near the coin dispenser.

"Basically, you're keeping the entire dog cleaning process out of your home - no smell, no hair, no tracking dirt and no water spills," owner Andy Lahti said. "It saves the time and mess of trying to do it at home."

Although customers are welcome to bring their own pet bathing products to Uncle Andy's, it's not necessary. Shampoo, conditioner and an odor control solution is dispensed through the shower nozzle.

Hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners are available for sale in the vending machine inside the pet wash. Towels, leashes, doggie treats and other supplies can also be purchased on site.

The warm air blow dryer is conveniently located next to the tub and is activated by turning the dial.

Uncle Andy's Pet Wash can accommodate most any dog size from small to large.

Washes start at $8 for 10 minutes. To extend the wash time, customers can insert additional coins. The pet wash accepts quarters, bills, tokens and credit cards.

Lahti, who also owns the Wash Depot, said Uncle Andy's complements the services provided at the car wash.

"You have plenty of time to wash and vacuum the car while your significant other is washing the dog," he said.

Anyone interested in learning how to operate the self-serve pet wash can drop by Uncle Andy's Friday from noon to 4 p.m. or Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"We're going to have someone on hand helping and explaining how it works," Lahti said.

Other times are available on Sunday by appointment. Call 370-3596.

Uncle Andy's Pet Wash is located at 800 W. Sharon Ave in Houghton.

Business hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
