CALUMET - Officers from the Michigan State Police bomb squad in Marquette detonated a pipe bomb Friday found in an apartment building in Calumet.

There are no details as of press time about who placed the bomb or why. No one was injured by the bomb.

The device, found in a ground floor apartment in a building at 417 Pine St., was removed by a remotely-controlled bomb squad robot.

An MSP bomb squad member, who would identify himself only as Sgt. Buck, said a call about the bomb was received in Marquette about 11 a.m. The bomb squad truck arrived about 3:30 p.m. and the robot entered the building at about 4 p.m. and exited with the device at about 6:25 p.m., and after being placed by the robot in an empty field near the apartment building, it was remotely detonated at about 6:40 p.m.

A Calumet police officer, a Laurium police officer, and a deputy from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office were on the scene to block off roads around the apartment building.

More details about the situation will be in the Monday edition of the Gazette.

417 Pine Street, Calumet? Pretty sure this is the same address where Spagnotti held hotages at gunpoint this winter.

Hey Johnnybluebeard thanks for the info "DMG close the forum on Letters to the Editor". I thought it was just me, and they blocked me out. I even e-mailed the editor trying to find out what was going on. No reply yet, of course.

at least they did not bomb the forest center in houghthon this time. calumet seems to harbour the terroists these days, lots of bad stuff happens there apparently.

The self centered nature of the maker of the explosive device doesn't take into consideration the safety of others. Pathetic. Thank goodness we had the necessary resources available to prevent a potential tragedy.

Americans have a lot of rights--as long as you don't try to exercise them.

You mean it took 4 1/2 hours to get a bomb squad there. That is terrible.
