Landscape design from concept to reality

May 20, 2009
The Daily Mining Gazette

ATLANTIC MINE - Whether your landscaping is in need of a little restoration or complete renovation, Halonen Landscaping has the experience to help create, revitalize and maintain the look you desire.

Located just two miles west of WalMart on M-26 in Atlantic Mine, Halonen Landscaping is a full-scale landscaping and lawn care company specializing in landscape design, sprinkler systems, hardscapes, lawn installation and maintenance.

This year they have expanded their company to include a nursery complete with trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vegetables and hanging baskets. For the past three years they have carried their own nursery stock for their clients who had requested landscape design; therefore, expanding their company to include a nursery seemed like the next natural step to take.

Ben Halonen started Halonen Landscaping over 10 years ago in Calumet out of his family home. Ben was born and raised here in the Copper Country and has come to know that living in a small community has its many advantages. He has enjoyed getting to know so many members of the community through his landscaping business. Their word of mouth has been a huge proponent of the company's success.

His employees also understand the dynamics of a small community, so they highly value their work and enjoy meeting and exceeding their customer's expectations. Therefore, as Halonen Landscaping expands into a nursery, they will continue to offer the same valued added services that so many of their current clients have come to know.

Halonen Landscaping staffs 16 employees. Their newest employee is nursery manager Mary Kangas, who brings 25 years of experience in plants, trees and shrubs to the business. Mary can assist you in your landscape design as well. You may come into the store with dimensions and the location of your site or she can make an onsite visit to your place to assist you with selecting the proper plants that will give you that professional look you desire. Ben said, "We have a knowledgeable and friendly nursery staff that is eager to assist you in selecting the right plants that fit your desired location as well as your own personal style."

Halonen Landscaping and Nursery will be celebrating their Grand Opening this weekend. Ben stated, "We will have a large selection of quality, hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, vegetables, trees and shrubs."

Materials such as sod, erosion control blankets, edging, mulch, wood chips, potting soil, straw, peat moss and top soil can also be purchased at Halonen Landscaping.

Ben said they also make home visits and offer free estimates.

"We can install new lawns, refurbish old, worn out lawns as well as install affordable sprinkler systems. People are realizing that our sprinkler systems are very affordable and are so easy to operate," Ben said. "We also install brick paver patios and sidewalks as well as install retaining walls." Professional lawn maintenance includes mowing, trimming, fertilizing and lawn clean-up.

"What our customers like is the fact that we do not just install lawn and landscaping, we also are here to take care of it," Ben added. "It is much cheaper to maintain a new lawn and landscape then to keep replacing it if it is not taken care of properly."

Halonen Landscaping and Nursery is located at 46104 M-26 in Atlantic Mine. Business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Call 482-LAWN or try online at
