Camp Kitwen to close

Painesdale prison on list

By Kurt Hauglie DMG Writer
POSTED: June 6, 2009

HANCOCK - Although Gov. Jennifer Granholm is taking action to reduce government costs, including closing prisons and prison camps, State Rep. Mike Lahti, D-Hancock, is disappointed so many Upper Peninsula employees may lose their jobs because of her actions.

Granholm announced Friday three prisons, including Camp Kitwen in Painesdale, would be closed by the end of the year. Other U.P. facilities slated for closure include Hiawatha Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, Camp Ottawa in Iron River and Camp Cusino in Shingleton.

The closings will result in layoffs, though it was unclear how many. The Department of Corrections will try to move as many of the 1,072 affected employees as possible into open jobs at other facilities.

Lahti said each prison camp has 45 to 50 employees, and although there will be lay-offs as a result of the closings, he doesn't know if any Kitwen employees will be able to transfer to other prison facilities.

"There probably isn't a lot of space (in other prisons for laid-off employees)," he said.

In a written statement on the Michigan Department of Corrections Web site, MDOC Director Patricia Caruso said MDOC remains "very cognizant" of the difficulties the closures will cause employees and the communities in which these facilities are located.

"We have carefully considered several alternatives," Caruso said.

"This plan allows the greatest flexibility to place employees in vacant positions near their current worksites while maintaining the ability to safely operate the prisons and protect Michigan's citizens."

Caruso said her department is working with the Office of State Employer, Michigan Corrections Organization and other unions to minimize the impact on staff.

The closings and lay-offs are part of Granholm's effort to save $120 million in the 2009-10 MDOC budget.

Lahti said the prison closings will have a greater impact on the small U.P. communities which depend on them for employment and supporting local businesses.

"The trouble with closing prisons in the U.P. is people have to move away (to get other prison jobs)," he said.

Lahti said although he doesn't know if it will happen, some Camp Kitwen employees may be able to transfer to Baraga Maximum Correctional Facility.

For an article in Tuesday's Gazette, Lahti said he suggested to Granholm and Caruso that rather than close U.P. prisons, it would be better to close prisons in communities with more than one prison, such as Jackson, but that idea was rejected.

"It didn't fit what they wanted to do," he said.

Lahti said in years past when the economy in the state was good, residents were in favor of building prisons in the U.P.

"We needed the jobs then," he said. "We still need the jobs."

He doesn't know what Granholm intends to do with the closed prisons, Lahti said, but the facility in Manistique was closed two years ago and it's still sitting empty.

Has Jen ever seen what it costs to lay off a union employee? Just ask GM! Their benefits continue for several years, and we still pay the freight. A decrease in one line item leads to an increase in another!! No savings at all!! And lest we forget, these are GOVERNMENT UNION EMPLOYEES!! Talk about a double edged sword she just gave you all to swallow.

LTSally, While the MI recession/depression began while Bush II was in office, the rest of the country was doing quite well, thank you, until Sept 2008. When are MI voters gonna wake up and realize that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again (electing Bolshevik Democrats to run the show in Lansing) and expecting a different result? But I'll admit, she is photogenic and occasionally gives a good speech. Kind of like Lord Obama.

So when the Granholm Express comes roaring through the copper country our state representative is there to assess the roadkill in its wake. Way to go, Mike! Your "maybe"s, "don't know"s and historical assessments really make a difference. One thing for sure is when downstate decides to make us their punching bag again, you'll be there to put it all in perspective for us!

Bo, You are an idiot. Michigan has been in a severe economic down turn for years which actually started under the Republican watch. You do not have a clue as to what will happen in the next year. As the Dow improves, jobless rates slowly fall and housing starts show an increase this recession may end a lot sooner than forecast. On the other hand it may not, so don't even pretend you have a clue.

Ya thats the way to create jobs, very productive, yet another great result of the democrate party depression. wait until we see the desperation of the "bo" administration a year or so down the road when hyper inflation and the devalued dollar hit us square in the pocket

It would be nice if the camp could go back to the county, and the local departmens could use it. Houghton County needs a new facility. It amazes me how people will blame the previous administration without giving reason (blaming Bush). What we are actually seeing is the government preparing for nationalization of law enforcement. We should be moving toward smaller government, giving the power to the states.

Sorry, of course I meant Sept 2008.

Unbelievable! If Granholm had the b*lls to volunteer to put up Camp Gitmo prisoners for $$$ she may well have the funds to keep some of these prisons open. So what becomes of the prisoners? Just turn 'em loose? I can't believe there is excess capacity in the other prisons. Folks, just keep on electing Dem governors if you want leadership that is clueless about encouraging job growth and doesn't give a rat's *ss about keeping crooks in prison. And quit trying to hang this all on Bush. MI was in a 1 state recession/depression for 6 years before Sept 2009.

Well, there's one thing for sure when Granholm said a while back "In five years you are going to be blown away with Michigan's economy." She wasn't just kidding was she??????? Thank goodness she can't be in office for yet another term!

Wow, we should just let the prisoners loose. Another great result of the Bush depression.

Man, Granholm is going out with a bang. What happened to bringing jobs to MI? Why doesn't she take a pay cut to start along with all her little helpers?

I don't like hearing about our local prison (Kitwen) closing but now that the decision is made what will happen to the facility? My vote is that the state give back the prison to the taxpayers. In turn we will give it to the Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon and Keweenaw County Sheriff departments for a shared work camp. All four of these departments need new jails and it would save millions of dollars by setting up a co-operative jail for these four systems. The facility is there put it to use and save us money as taxpayers. It's a perfect location, a new building and all four departments need a new jail.
