Antoinette Clare Shutey Wonderly
CALUMET - Antoinette Clare Shutey Wonderly died on Nov. 14, 2008, of natural causes at the age of 93. She was residing in Annapolis, Md. at Sunrise Assisted Living, near her niece Elizabeth Winegrad.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Calumet on July 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Abraham Mupparathara to officiate. Interment will be immediately following the ceremony.
Antoinette was born Aug. 21, 1915, in Calumet, to Antonia and John Shutey. She was the third of four children, all of whom have predeceased her.
Antoinette attended St. Elizabeth Hospital's Nursing School in Chicago, Ill. and joined the Navy in WWII. She served in California at Navy hospitals as a surgical nurse.
During the war, she met Richard Wonderly, whom she married. She had no children. She and her husband, Richard, lived in many places in Michigan and Indiana, including Lake Webster and Syracuse, Ind. and Jackson, Mich. They loved to spend winters, when they could, in Florida at the fish camp and exploring places to fish and enjoy outdoor living. Antoinette and Richard retired to Cape Coral Fla. in the 1980s. Antoinette remained in Florida after the death of her husband, Richard, and her sister, Amelia. In 2006, she moved to Annapolis, Md.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing, painting and did all of these with great style and talent. She was always ready to learn something new and try something different. She was interested in politics and many causes, to which she contributed generously. As a nurse, she understood, and continued to study, medicine and in her later years, was very much a believer in holistic medicine.
Antoinette was a kind, loving wife, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor. She was independent and thorough. She was intelligent, talented, precise and committed. She carried the burden of her generation, being the last of her family.
