Kids fish derby coming

July 10, 2009
The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club will host its sixth annual Kids Fishing Derby at Swedetown Pond, Calumet, Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The popular event is open to the public and Keweenaw youngsters, area visitors and vacationers are invited to enjoy a day of fishing and fun with the kids.

A limited number of rods and reels are available on site, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. Free bait will be furnished. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

"We're pleased to partner with the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen to hold this important summer youth event," said Paul Lehto, Calumet Township Supervisor. "Besides being a wonderful learning experience for kids, the derby is an excellent activity for the community. "Kids learn about fish and fishing and have fun doing it."

In addition to fishing, games and casting contests, all kids receive a free picnic lunch and beverage. Club members and fishermen will provide help and instruction with baiting hooks, casting, knot tying and fish identification. Fish are weighed and measured, and each kid who catches a fish, any size, wins a prize.

"No kid will go home empty-handed and all participants are welcome to keep their fish," said CKSC volunteer, Jerry Lamppa. "It's a fun opportunity to learn new fishing skills."

The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club has a strong commitment to the community's youth and is proud to host and sponsor the popular annual Kids Fishing Derby for area kids and their families. "You never know when taking a kid fishing will spark an interest that lasts a lifetime," Lamppa added.
