BAYFIELD - Alan R. Newago, 62, of Bayfield, Wis. passed away Friday, July 31, 2009, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 23, 1947, in Hayward, Wis. the son of Joseph and Mary (White) Newago.

Alan was raised on Madeline Island, Wis. and attended schools in Ashland, Wis. He received his captain's license by age 17 and became the youngest ferryboat captain.

He married Cathy Sandmon on June 4, 1970,. on Madeline Island.

Alan worked for the Ashland County Sheriff's department and served as the chief of police on Madeline Island for a few years. Alan and his family also owned and operated a commercial fishing boat for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy of Bayfield; six children, Thomas (Tina) Sandmon of Lake Nebagamon, Wis., Shayne (Cheri) Sandmon of Lake Nebagamon, Georgiann Sandmon of Hancock, Wendy (Don) Thomas of Bayfield, Adam (Brenda) Newago of Menomonie, Wis. and Joe (Tami) Newago of Bayfield; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers; a sister; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services took place in Washburn, Wis.

Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn was in charge of arrangements.
